Puygueraud 2015: ‘The leading player in the appellation’ – Decanter

Bordeaux does not get better at this price. The 2015 Puygueraud comes from the hands of the celebrated Thienpont family, who owns some of the most famous Bordeaux châteaux and make some of the most sought-after wines, including Vieux Château Certan, Le Pin and Pavie-Macquin.

Château Puygueraud is considered the flagship estate of Côtes de Francs and a benchmark for this appellation’s revival. This blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec, from the great 2015 vintage, shows its pedigree. Fine aromatics of dark fruit and tobacco leaf are effortlessly underscored by gravelly tannins and a superbly long and dry finish – classic Bordeaux. This is a serious wine and punches well above its weight.

The Côtes des Francs is the smallest appellation in the Côtes de Bordeaux vineyards and Puygueraud is its shining star. 2015 in Bordeaux was unquestionably great. Without the huge ripeness of ‘09 or ‘10, it shows similar depth and poise to 2000 or 2005. The hallmark of a great Bordeaux vintage lies in the quality of wines from lesser-known, modestly-priced châteaux and the 2015 Puygueraud is a no-brainer at under R400 per bottle.

Tasting notes

Puygueraud, Francs Côtes de Bordeaux 2015

The leading player in the appellation. A blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc with 5% Malbec. Lovely aromatic expression – blueberry and dark fruit notes. Sweet fruited palate with a touch of oak present. Fine, rounded tannins and a firm, chalky finish. Fine ageing potential. Drinking window 2020 - 2030. – Decanter, 90/100

Lively, with a light brambly hint throughout, while damson plum, raspberry and bitter cherry notes dart to and fro. The sleek finish has juniper and savory hints for added energy. – James Molesworth, Wine Spectator, 90/100

So pretty and refined already with dark fruit and floral character. Full body, very polished tannins and a precise and clean finish. – James Suckling, 92-93/100
