This wine is just sensational. It’s produced from a 1952 vineyard on the higher slopes of Voorgroenberg, 300 meters above sea level, on decomposed granite soils. With 100% whole-bunch, natural fermentation, it’s ‘a beautiful and enthralling rendition of the variety’, notes Christian Eedes. This 95-pointer has elegance in spades, with fresh, pristine fruit and a lingering tannin backbone.

A skin-contact white from Rioja? Yes please. Alonso & Pedrajo’s 2018 Suañé Blanco Reserva is a zesty, mineral blend of Viura and Sauvignon Blanc, fermented on skins for 10 days. This wine ‘has chiselled acidity, green apple and citrus zest flavours, good extract and chalky minerality to spare’, writes Tim Atkin, ‘and an extremely tasty, almost salty finish’, concludes the Wine Advocate. 2023 Nedbank Cape Winemakers Guild Auction

Taking place on Friday 6 and Saturday 7 October at the Lord Charles Hotel in Somerset West, the Nedbank Cape Winemakers Guild Auction showcases rare and unique wines produced in small quantities. A total of 478 lots will be sold over the two days and the auction will also be hosted online by Strauss & Co. Highlights include bottlings from Erika Obermeyer, Alex Starey, Richard Kershaw and Donovan Rall, who have wines on auction for the first time this year.
