February value pack, Hogan Divergent, & ‘incredibly impressive’ value Bordeaux

Leading this week’s selection of favourites is Hogan’s ‘best release yet of Divergent’, says Tim Atkin. Bordeaux 2019 continues to thrill the critics, and 94-point Capbern has to be one of our top value picks of the vintage. From ‘the world’s best universal wine glass’, Gabriel Glas’ versatile stemless sets are back in stock, and if ever you needed an excuse to celebrate, go BIG this week with a jeroboam of Drappier’s Millésime Exception 2012. We round off with our February Insiders’ Pack – an intriguing mix of unsung producers, varieties, and regions, with free delivery countrywide.

Hogan Divergent 2021
R 430 PER BOTTLE

‘Extremely attractive’, says Christian Eedes, this 95-point blend is inspired by Lebanon’s Chateau Musar. It offers immense drinking pleasure now, but with the structure and concentration to age up to a decade. Equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan and Cinsault, expect inviting aromatics of deep plum, wild strawberry, crushed rose petals and sour cherry. The acidity is electrifying, the finish exceptionally long, and the tannins are gravelly with a savoury, graphite end. This small-batch wine deserves to be shared.

Bordeaux 2019 ‘Best ever? No hyperbole’Jancis Robinson MW
FROM R 595

Bordeaux 2019 has quickly positioned itself as one of the finest vintages of the modern era! At the recent Southwold tasting, Jancis Robinson asserted that ‘2016 rivals 2019 and 2019 is probably more consistently fine’. The 94-point Capbern is ‘incredibly impressive’, says Jeb Dunnuck. It’s a great value Saint-Estèphe – coming in under R600. At R1,600, Margaux third growth d’Issan boasts double 95 points from Antonio Galloni and Neal Martin, and ‘should give 30 to 40 years of drinking pleasure, writes Neal. Need we say more?

Gabriel-Glas 6-Piece Stemless Set
R 995 PER SET

The world’s best universal wine glass is now available in stemless! Also crafted from lead-free, Austrian crystal, the shape of the stemless glass takes its cue from their famous ‘one for all’ design. With a slightly broader and sturdier base, these are perfect for casual wine drinking, as well as cocktails and spirits. And they won’t blow away during a windy day in the Cape or a highveld storm up north.
