We recently announced our much-anticipated new event schedule, and tickets are moving quickly. Leading our local wine highlights this week is the 92-point Waterford Antigo, which punches well above its weight at R185, and the juicy and aromatic Holism Garnacha. Our international favourites include Syrah heavyweight Verzier Saint-Joseph Madone 2019, and Julien Schaal’s Schoenenbourg Alsace Grand Cru Riesling – a rich and versatile food wine.

The newly released Waterford Antigo is a Cabernet Sauvignon dominated, Bordeaux-style blend, and – at only R185 a bottle – it ‘totally over-delivers’, exclaims Christian Eedes! Recently scoring 92 points, this wine is generous and moreish with notes of red cherry, blueberries and crushed stone leading to a herbaceous finish with beautifully integrated tannins.

Julien Schaal Schoenenbourg Alsace Grand Cru Riesling 2020

Julien Schaal may be better known for his Elgin Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, but he also produces Grand Cru Alsace Riesling from the famous Schoenenbourg vineyards. The Schoenenbourg Alsace Grand Cru Riesling 2020 is rich and complex with layers of lime cordial, defined herby character, and a focused acidity. The palate is densely packed, making for a diverse food-friendly wine. Best enjoyed now, or cellar for another decade.

From dryland bush vines on the very top of the Piekenierskloof Mountain comes this juicy Grenache. With a deep plum colour that’s almost unreal, and aromatics of violets, meat spice, damp earth as well as black cherries, it’s the perfect companion on a rainy winter’s day.
